This is one of the Doepke do-it-yourself kit cars that was produced in the 1950s. The other was the Jaguar (sold here recently).
I've seen quite a few of these MGs, but very few as nice as this one. No rust, no dents, no nicks and scratches that detract from its appearance. It even has the original shifter (often missing) and the original windsheild frame WITH the windshield intact! Most of the time, the windshield frame has been replaced, and there is seldom a windshield. Even the dashboard decal is perfect.
Produced from 1954 to 1956, this version has the metal wheel covers, indicating an earlier model. It is also the pre-painted red finish. Many were released only in primer, and the kid had to paint the car himself.
There are only two things that keep this car from being perfect, and they are minor issues. The simulated leather door panel/upholsery on the driver side needs to be reinstalled, and could use some color touchup. It is included and is shown in the picture beside the original instruction sheet. That's right...this car comes with its original instruction sheet, too!
The other minor issue is the steering wheel is slightly bent, but it's only noticeable when you turn the wheel.
This Doepke MG is one of the finet MG model toys ever made, with incredible detail and solid construction. It looks great beside my fireplace, and I'm not in a hurry to to see it go. So the price is firm...for now.
